Fossil Finder extracts data from the Paleobiology Database (paleobiodb.org), which are already publicly available. These in turn are compiled from published and accessible literature. The data are then combined with images from Integrated Digitized Biocollections (iDigBio). The application is the best way for paleontologists and hobby fossils collectors to find fossils in their vicinity.

Paleobiology Database (https://paleobiodb.org/#/faq) is organized and operated by a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional, international group of paleobiological researchers. Its purpose is to provide global, collection-based occurrence and taxonomic data for organisms of all geological ages, as well data services to allow easy access to data for independent development of analytical tools, visualization software, and applications of all types. This is realized by recording all relevant publications of taxonomic data in their geological context. The license conditions can be read at: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Integrated Digitized Biocollections (https://www.idigbio.org/about-idigbio) provide data and images for millions of biological specimens in electronic format for the research community, government agencies, students, educators, and the general public. The license conditions can be read at https://www.idigbio.org/content/idigbio-terms-use-policy and https://www.idigbio.org/content/idigbio-intellectual-property-policy
